You’ll experience amazing music from several Jazz Angels youth bands playing with legendary saxophonist, band leader, composer, and arranger Tom Scott, our professional staff and former Jazz on the Patio celebrities. Tom has performed with jazz greats including Quincy Jones, Lalo Schfrin, Barbara Morrison, Lewis Nash, Jeff Hamilton, Shelly Berg and other famous artists such as Paul McCartney, Steel Dan, Carol King, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. We’ll also have some really cool clips of jazz activities we’ve designed for our students to participate interactively from their homes.
The Jazz Angels are thrilled to provide this event to the entire community for free. But, should you wish to support us financially we have created ways for you to do so. Your financial support will help fund this virtual event, our online interactive programming initiatives, and importantly, need-based scholarships for children whose parents who are experiencing extreme financial hardships as a result of the pandemic.
We thought it was important to let you know what the Jazz Angels have been up to since the very beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. In short, we scaled up to meet the moment in a very short time.
We were greatly concerned about the effects of isolation on young people and their families. The thought that they were going to be at home with no access to daily person-to-person interaction from school or friends was untenable. While we were not funded to attack this problem, we were compelled to attack it head on. We devised, developed and moved programs to an online interactive platform reaching 300 children ages 11 to 17 throughout central and southern California. The interactive nature of our programming is what makes it special and so successful. It gives our young people the opportunity to engage in something that features real time interaction with peers and staff. This interaction helps mitigate the loss of in-person contact and has become even more critical in maintaining the well-being of them and their families.
